DROMARA'S annual 7-A-Sides was held last week with 20 teams competing for the £1,000 prize money on offer.
As has become the norm with this competition, the players on show and football on offer was off an extremely high standard.
The competition was made up off teams from the Amateur, Newcastle and Mid-Ulster leagues with a few select teams thrown in
to spice things up. Some of the talent on show included Raymond 'Soupy' Campbell, Ryan Moffatt and Aidan Watson.
Group matches were played from Monday-Thursday with the top two from each night progressing through to the finals on Saturday.
The first two quarter finals saw Peter Kelly's select (Killyleagh) take on Doogles Boys (Downpatrick) and Santos (Banbridge) take on LRFC (Belfast).
Doogle's Boys never really got going and P Kelly's youthful side proved too much and they ran out 5-1 winners with Dale Davidson and PC the stars of the show. Santos ran up the same scoreline to safely progress to the semi-finals.
The second quarter final matches involved a Mickey Savage select side taking on Young Locals (Drumaness/Newcastle) and Downshire (Hillsborough) versus Ballynahinch Olympic.
Young Locals, who were strengthened with the presence of Declan Allistair and Colm Kearney caused a bit of an upset when they beat Mickey's Select side 1-0, Chris McVarnick got the goal.
But Mickey, whose sides have won this competition four times since it began, admitted his side didn't do enough to win it. The other quarter final saw Downshire progress past Olympic 2-0.
The semi-finals saw P Kelly's select take on Young locals and Santos play Downshire. There was nothing really between the teams in the first semi but the youthful energy and reflexes of P Kelly saw his side through 3-0.
Santos who were playing some good football defeated a battling Downshire side 3-1. Ryan Moffatt was the star of the show for Santos.
The large crowd were hoping for a close and exciting final and they were not to be disappointed. The opening stages were dominated by P Kelly and his side raced into a 2-0 lead with some fine football.
But Santos soon got to grips with the game and pulled a goal back and then went on to equalise through Ryan Moffatt.
The second half was a cagey affair with both keepers playing prominent roles. Darren McConnell put Kellys side 3-2 up with a 25 yard screamer into the top corner.
At this stage it looked like Kelly's were going to hold on but in the last 30 secs, Barry Tumilty found space in the box to fire home the equaliser and take the match into extra time.
This late goal seemed to deflate Peter Kelly's side as Santos took control early on. They scored through Wilson and Moffet to go 5-3 up. PC pulled a goal back to make the last few minutes exciting for the fans. But it was not enough as Santos held on to win an excellent final.
Player of the tournament went to Darren McConnell whose energy and enthusiasm saw him a standout. This award was kindly sponsored by Colin Patterson, Roofing and Joinery, Dromara.
