BANBRIDGE Bus Office has been established as a dedicated application centre for the new 60+ Free Travel SmartPass.
Translink has welcomed last week's confirmation by Transport Minister Conor Murphy that 60-64 year-olds here are to enjoy free unlimited travel on public transport in Northern Ireland from 1st October as a major incentive to getting more people onto
buses and trains – and another step in tackling congestion.
With around 90,000 consumers potentially eligible for the new scheme, Translink is urging passengers to get their applications in by 29th August to ensure they receive their SmartPass in time for the big day.
Ciaran Rogan, Translink's Marketing Executive, said: "We are delighted for our passengers that this very valuable benefit has now been confirmed and commend the Minister, his department and the wider Executive for helping to deliver it.
"This is a very active age group, with many still working and travelling extensively. Completely free travel on all Translink bus and rail services throughout Northern Ireland will make a real difference to their lives and help them make great savings in these tough economic times.
"We expect many 60-64 year olds to take advantage of free travel and we encourage them to apply early for their 60+ SmartPass.
"Application forms are now available by calling the 60+ SmartPass hotline (0845 600 0049) or by logging on to www.60smartpass.info
"From 30th June to 29th August, we will operate 26 dedicated application centres based at various regional Translink bus and rail centres including Lisburn Bus Centre and Banbridge Bus Office, and also at Grosvenor House in Belfast and the Millennium Forum in Derry.
"Applicants must take their completed application forms, together with documentation proving identity and residency, to their local centre for staff to process their details.
"We believe today's news is also a big win for the whole of Northern Ireland. With up to 90,000 people now set to take the bus or train much more frequently, the number of cars on the roads should be reduced helping to bring us nearer to a sustainable solution to congestion," he concluded.
The new 60+ SmartPass will operate in addition to the existing popular 65+ Senior SmartPass, which was introduced in 2002. Translink figures show that 65+ seniors are taking real advantage of free public transport, with a 10 per cent increase in uptake in the last four years and 750,000 million additional journeys per year. The 65+ SmartPass entitles passengers to free travel across Ireland; the new 60+ SmartPass is valid for travel only in Northern Ireland.
