SHOP owners in Banbridge town centre have been urged to replace the steel shutters on their shop fronts with easier on the eye modern safety grilles.
The Leader was contacted by a visitor to the town who suggested the idea to help improve the look of the town.
"Banbridge is a very tidy town," said John Ard. "On two recent visits my wife and I have been impressed by the range of shops in the main
street and by the near total absence of litter.
"It is a pleasure to browse there during the day. Those responsible for managing the town centre are to be congratulated.
"Like may Northern Irish towns, for understandable reasons given the urban experience of the past 40 years, it presents a very different face when the shops shut.
"We walked from the war memorial to the Crozier monument recently in the early evening and were depressed by the steel-shuttered deadness of it all.
"I know there are modern security window grilles which allow browsers to see what is on display while at the same time protecting the shop contents.
"If main street shop owners could be encouraged to replace the hideous steel rollers with these more shopper-friendly, see-through, safety grilles, Banbridge as a whole would benefit, aesthetically and commercially."
